Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Marseille? Terminals, Cruise Lines and Time Ashore
Cruise ships in Marseille dock at one of two terminals: the large ones at the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal (MPCT), in the working port north of the city, and the smaller ones at J4, in the city centre next to the MuCEM. This guide draws on the Port of Marseille Fos, the Marseille tourist office and the October 2026 call schedule published by Croisière Marseille Provence.
Key takeaways
- Marseille has two cruise terminals: the MPCT, reached through Gate 4 of the commercial port, and J4, in the heart of the city next to the Old Port, according to the Port of Marseille Fos.
- In the October 2026 schedule published by Croisière Marseille Provence, 93 of 105 calls were at the MPCT and 12 at J4 — and no ship at J4 carried more than about 1,000 passengers.
- MSC (33 calls) and Costa (24 calls) made up more than half of the calls that month, and every one of them was a turnaround call, where cruises begin or end in Marseille — our count from the same schedule.
- Most ships stay a long time: the median call lasted about 10 hours in October 2026, our calculation from the published arrival and departure times.
- From the MPCT, the Old Port is not walkable: a free port shuttle or the 35T bus runs to Place de la Joliette, then it is about 25 minutes on foot, according to the Marseille tourist office.
Which terminal will my cruise ship use, MPCT or J4?
It depends on the size of your ship: large ships use the MPCT, smaller ones J4. The Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal and the neighbouring terminals A to E are all reached through Gate 4 of the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, off exit 5 of the A55, according to the Port of Marseille Fos. J4 is a different world: the port authority describes it as the cruise terminal "in the heart of the city", next to the Old Port, La Major cathedral, the Panier district and the MuCEM, a few minutes from the centre on foot.
The berth is not fixed in advance for good. In the October 2026 schedule, several ships planned for J4 were moved to the MPCT. Your ship's daily program gives the terminal for the day; check it the evening before you arrive.
| Terminal | Where it is | Which ships | Getting to the Old Port | The limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MPCT (and terminals A to E) | Working port, north of the city, Gate 4 | Large ships — up to about 7,600 passengers in October 2026 (Legend of the Seas) | Free port shuttle or 35T bus to Place de la Joliette, then about 25 minutes on foot or 10 to 15 minutes by bus (tourist office) | Nothing to see on foot from the berth; the first hour goes on getting into town |
| J4 | City centre, J4 esplanade next to the MuCEM | Smaller ships — Ponant, Windstar, Club Med 2, some Viking and Oceania ships in October 2026 | A few minutes on foot (Port of Marseille Fos) | Few large ships; the berth can still be switched to the MPCT |
Which cruise lines call at Marseille?
About thirty cruise lines call at Marseille, according to Croisière Marseille Provence. In October 2026 alone, the schedule listed nineteen of them. By number of calls that month: MSC Cruises (33), Costa Cruises (24), Viking (12), Norwegian Cruise Line (6), TUI Cruises (4), Royal Caribbean (4), Silversea (3), Oceania Cruises (3), then P&O Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Ponant, CFC and Orient Express (2 each), and Princess Cruises, Carnival, Explora Journeys, Windstar, Club Med and CroisiEurope (1 each).
Two families stand out. The big-ship lines — MSC, Costa, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess, P&O, AIDA, TUI and Carnival — dock at the MPCT. The smaller luxury and expedition ships — Viking, Oceania, Silversea, Explora, Ponant, Windstar, Club Med — are the ones that can use J4. This list is a snapshot of one month: other lines call at other times of the year.
Is Marseille a port of call or the port where my cruise starts?
For many MSC and Costa passengers, it is where the cruise starts or ends. In the October 2026 schedule, 66 of the 105 calls were turnaround calls, and 57 of those were MSC and Costa ships. On a Mediterranean loop, the same ship can carry both kinds of passengers: some board in Marseille, others are simply calling there for the day.
That changes the day. A passenger in transit needs a day that starts and ends at the ship. A passenger embarking or disembarking may need to start at a hotel, Saint-Charles station or the airport, or end there. Our private days adapt to those times and places — tell us where and when, and the day is built around it. The details for ship days are on our Marseille shore excursions page.
How long do cruise ships stay in Marseille?
Usually most of the day: about 10 hours at the median in October 2026. Of the 101 calls with an arrival and a departure on the same day, 65 lasted 10 hours or more and 30 between 8 and 10 hours, our calculation from the published schedule. The short exception was the MSC Seaview, in port from 2 to 7 p.m. on several Fridays. A few ships, such as Le Ponant and the Silver Ray, stayed overnight.
A call of 8 hours or more is enough for a full day inland: Aix-en-Provence and Cassis, the Luberon villages or Avignon all fit, which is why these days are marked as compatible with a cruise call in our catalogue. A short call is better spent in Marseille itself, for example on our 3 to 4 hour Marseille city tour.
Worth knowing: the Monaco and Saint-Tropez days last twelve hours, which is why we do not offer them on a cruise call. The lavender fields of Valensole are a case-by-case answer: the day lasts about seven hours and only makes sense from late June to mid-July, so it depends on your ship's arrival and departure times — send them to us and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
How do I get from the cruise port to the Old Port, Aix or Cassis?
On your own from the MPCT, take the free port shuttle or the 35T bus to Place de la Joliette; from there the Old Port is about 25 minutes on foot, or 10 to 15 minutes on bus lines 55 and 82 from Joliette or line 83 from outside the MuCEM, according to the Marseille tourist office. From J4, you are already in the centre. For Aix-en-Provence, Cassis, the Luberon and Avignon, distances and drive times from the terminal are set out in a table on our shore excursions page, next to the private day that goes there.
If you would rather see Marseille itself, our guide to Marseille in one day from a cruise ship covers what fits in the time you have. For a private day that starts from your hotel rather than the ship, see our Marseille private tours.
Independent, not your cruise line: we are not affiliated with any of the cruise lines named on this page. If you book an excursion through your cruise line, the ship waits for it; it does not wait for independent operators. We plan every day backwards from your all-aboard time and keep a margin, but we cannot make the ship wait.
Methodology
Terminal locations come from the Port of Marseille Fos, and shuttle, bus and walking times from the Marseille tourist office, both consulted on 2026-10-01. The number of calls, the cruise lines, the terminals, the turnaround share and the time in port were counted and calculated by us from the October 2026 call schedule published by Croisière Marseille Provence, as it stood at the end of September 2026; schedules change during the season, so treat these figures as a snapshot of one month, not a forecast. Passenger capacities are those listed in the schedule. Tour durations come from our own published catalogue.
In short
Large cruise ships dock at the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal, north of the city, and smaller ones at J4, a few minutes on foot from the Old Port. In October 2026, 93 of 105 calls were at the MPCT, MSC and Costa accounted for more than half of them, and the median call lasted about 10 hours — enough for a full day in Aix, Cassis, the Luberon or Avignon.
Frequently asked questions
Can you walk from the Marseille cruise port to the Old Port?
From the MPCT, no: it sits in a working commercial port several kilometers north of the centre, and the tourist office points passengers to a shuttle or bus to Place de la Joliette, then about 25 minutes on foot. From J4, yes: the Port of Marseille Fos describes it as a few minutes from the city centre on foot.
Is there a free shuttle at the Marseille cruise port?
Yes. According to the Marseille tourist office, the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille runs a free shuttle on every day when ships are in port at Gate 4, usually dropping passengers at Place de la Joliette. The 35T city bus also links Joliette to the terminal.
Where do Royal Caribbean ships dock in Marseille?
In the October 2026 schedule published by Croisière Marseille Provence, the Royal Caribbean ships calling at Marseille — Legend of the Seas, three times, and Explorer of the Seas — all docked at the MPCT, staying around 9 to 10 hours. Check your ship's daily program for the berth on the day.
Where do MSC and Costa ships dock in Marseille?
At the MPCT. In October 2026, MSC and Costa made 57 calls between them, every one a turnaround call where cruises begin or end in Marseille, according to our count from the Croisière Marseille Provence schedule.
Which cruise ships use the J4 terminal?
Smaller ones. In October 2026, J4 received ships from Ponant, Windstar, Club Med, Orient Express and CroisiEurope, plus some Viking and Oceania ships, none carrying more than about 1,000 passengers. Several ships first planned for J4 were moved to the MPCT, so confirm the berth on the day.
Is there time to see Aix-en-Provence on a cruise call?
Usually, yes. Aix is about 30 kilometers from the cruise terminal, 30 to 45 minutes by road, and our Aix, Marseille and Cassis day lasts 6 to 8 hours according to our catalogue. With a median call of about 10 hours in October 2026, it fits most calls with a margin before all-aboard time.
