Private Driver or Group Tour in Provence? An Honest Comparison

Marseille cruise port

Search for a day out in Provence and you will find coach excursions at a modest per-person price sitting next to private tours costing several hundred euros for the group. The gap looks enormous until you work out what each one actually buys. Neither is objectively better. They suit different situations, and the honest answer depends mostly on how many of you there are and how fixed your schedule is.

The maths nobody does upfront

A group excursion is priced per person, a private tour for the whole vehicle. That single difference flips the comparison as your group grows. Two people will almost always pay less on a coach. Four people are usually close. Six or more, the private tour is often the cheaper option outright — before counting what you save in time.

Do this before comparing: multiply the per-person price by your group size, then compare with the private total. People routinely compare a per-person price against a per-group price and conclude the private option costs five times more.

What you actually pay for with a private driver

  • Door-to-door pickup. From your hotel or directly at the cruise terminal, not from a meeting point you have to reach first.
  • A schedule built around you. If your ship leaves at 17:00, the day is planned backwards from 17:00.
  • The ability to change your mind. Loved a village? Stay longer. Tired? Skip a stop.
  • No waiting for twenty other people at every stop, which is where coach days quietly lose an hour or more.
  • A driver who can taste nothing and drive everything, which matters on a wine day.

When a group tour is genuinely the better choice

It would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. A coach excursion makes sense when:

  • You are travelling alone or as a couple and the budget is the deciding factor.
  • You are relaxed about timing and happy to follow a fixed route.
  • You actively enjoy the group atmosphere and meeting other travellers.
  • The destination is a single fixed site rather than a route with several stops.

The cruise passenger case is different

If you are on a port call, one factor outweighs the others: the all-aboard time. A coach excursion sold by the cruise line usually guarantees the ship waits. An independent coach tour does not, and neither does a taxi. A private driver does not make the ship wait either — but the whole day is built around your departure time, and because the itinerary is yours, it can be shortened at any point if traffic turns against you.

That flexibility is the actual product. Our short Marseille tour exists precisely for tight port calls, and the longer Aix, Marseille and Cassis day for calls with more room.

What about a taxi or a ride-hailing app?

Cheaper than either option for a straight transfer, and fine if you simply want to reach the Old Port and explore on foot. Two limits: nobody is guiding you, and you have no guarantee of finding a car for the return from a village in the Luberon at six in the evening. For a single-destination trip it works. For a route with several stops, it does not.

A quick decision guide

  • Two people, flexible day, tight budget — group tour.
  • Four or more people — compare properly, the private option is often close or cheaper.
  • Cruise call with a firm all-aboard time — private, for the schedule control.
  • Wine tasting on the programme — private, unless someone volunteers to stay sober.
  • Travelling with children or reduced mobility — private, for the pacing alone.

The question worth asking a private operator

Not the price. Ask whether the itinerary can be changed on the day, whether pickup at your exact address is included, and how they handle a cruise departure time. Those three answers tell you whether you are buying a genuinely private day or a small-group tour in disguise.

If you want to compare formats side by side, our full range of tours lists durations and prices per group rather than per person, so the comparison is straightforward.
